Breath Alcohol Testing

For a DOT breath-alcohol test, the donor should blow steadily and forcefully for at least six seconds, or until the device indicates that it has received an adequate breath sample.

DOT result levels

• Below 0.020: DOT test is completed with no further action under Part 40.

• 0.020–0.039: The employee must be temporarily removed from safety-sensitive duties for the period required by the applicable DOT agency.

• 0.040 or higher: A DOT alcohol violation requiring removal from safety-sensitive duties and completion of the SAP return-to-duty process.

  For Non-DOT the employer’s policy determines the cutoffs, confirmation requirements, insufficient-breath procedure, and consequences.
