Direct Observation (Additional Fee)

A directly observed urine drug test means an authorized observer actually watches the urine pass from the donor’s body into the collection cup. It is more intrusive than a routine or monitored collection.

For a DOT urine test, direct observation is required when:

• The test is return-to-duty or follow-up.

• The specimen temperature is outside 90–100°F (32–38°C) within four minutes.

• The specimen shows signs of tampering.

• The donor’s conduct or possessions indicate an attempt to tamper.

  For a non-DOT test, observation depends on the employer’s policy.
